Cloud Resiliency & Disaster Recovery as a Service

With production applications in the cloud you are no longer looking at just servers and databases, but a multitude of cloud services.  Many (most) services are regional or global so loss of an Availability Zone or AZ ("AKA" data center) does not bring down the service.  Several zonal based services for servers (EC2), databases (RDS) and data warehouses (Red Shift) still require resiliency strategies to be implemented and tested.  The conversation shifts from can we recover from a data center outage to....

• What level of Availability Zone (AZ) resiliency is required for the application in the production region?
• Does the application(s) require an out of region recovery strategy in the event that the production region suffers an outage of one or more critical services?  Can the application(s) be down for 8, 10, 24 hours?

Today, building out an alternate (DR) data center for your production data center can be  replaced by a cloud solution (DRaaS) and in addition to recovery of Windows and Linux servers DRaaS cloud providers offer solutions for specific technical platforms such as:

• IBM AIX
• IBM z Mainframes
